FOR RELEASE 1/22/06
Higher Learning Commission Self-Study: Public Invited to Make Written Comment
Greenville
College will undergo a comprehensive evaluation visit April 24-26,
2006, by a team representing the Higher Learning Commission. This
process is a regular part of maintaining accreditation. Greenville
College has been accredited by the Commission since 1948. Its
accreditation allows the College to award Bachelor’s and Master’s
degrees on its main campus and at various sites in central and southern
Illinois.
The Higher Learning Commission is one of
six accrediting agencies providing institutional accreditation on a
regional basis. Institutional accreditation evaluates an entire college
as a whole while other agencies provide accreditation according to a
specific program – such as teacher education or nursing. Accreditation
is voluntary. The Higher Learning Commission accredits approximately
1250 institutions of higher education in a nineteen-state region and is
recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
For
the past two and a half years, Greenville College has engaged in a
process of self-study, examining how it satisfies the Commission’s
criteria for accreditation. The evaluation team will visit the main
campus to gather evidence that the self-study is thorough and accurate.
The team will recommend to the Commission a continuing status for the
college; following a review process, the Commission itself will take
the final action.
The public is invited to submit comments regarding the college to the Higher Learning Commission at:
