The Greenville College Management Department has won the
First Annual St. Louis Collegiate Investment Management Contest. By winning this contest they received a check
for $10,000, which is to be used for purposes selected by the Management
Department.
The portfolio of stocks selected by Greenville College was
up just over 40% during the 28 month contest.
During this time the S&P 500 increased 26%, and the portfolios of
the other contestants increased an average of just 17%.
The contest began December 1, 2004 and concluded March 31,
2007. Each college and university in the
St. Louis area was invited to participate.
Each school was asked to select a portfolio of 20 "value" stocks and was
given one million hypothetical dollars to invest. An equal amount had to be invested in each
stock and the portfolio could not be changed once the contest started. During the contest Greenville College's one
million dollars grew to $1,404,000.
Dr. Ivan Filby, the head of the Management Department,
stated, "We are so pleased. We have said
repeatedly that the quality of the education that Greenville College offers
rivals that of any school in this area.
This win is just one more demonstration of that."
Dr. Larry Sayler teaches Greenville College's investment
class and oversaw the selection of the winning portfolio. He said, "When this contest started I firmly
believed we had a better than average chance of winning. We were up against some strong competition and
we are were very fortunate to have won.
Participating in this contest has been an excellent learning experience
for our students."
Professor Sayler will be teaching Investments again this
fall, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:45. Non-traditional students are welcome to
enroll in any GC course, and may do so by contacting the Registrar's
Office. Professor Sayler said, "Anyone
who successfully completes this course will have a thorough understanding of
the stock market. I can't promise that
every graduate of the course will do this well, but all students in the course
should come away with the tools they need to help them construct a winning
investment portfolio." The students in
the class will also be involved in selecting the stocks for the next investment
contest.
Two more contests are already under way. The Second Annual Collegiate Investment
Management Contest began December 1, 2005 and will conclude March 31,
2008. The third contest began December
1, 2006 and will finish March 31, 2009. The
fourth contest will begin December 1, 2007.
The St. Louis Collegiate Investment Management Contest was organized by
Principia College. UMB Bank, St. Louis,
supervised the contest and determined the results.
