GREENVILLE, ILL. – This weekend, the board of trustees of Greenville College, without any knowledge of President Jim Mannoia, announced thatMannoiaHall_small.jpg the residence hall previously unnamed but referred to as the College Avenue Residence Hall will now be officially  named the Ellen J. Mannoia Hall, in honor of the college’s first lady. The announcement was first made during the President’s Society Dinner on Friday night and then made public at the close of the college’s traditional Commencement ceremony Sunday afternoon.

During his announcement, Craig Tidball, chairman of the board of trustees, said, “From the first day Ellen Mannoia set foot on this campus she made a splash and we all got wet. We've been living in the wake of her wonder ever since. It's been easy to follow the ripples of her presence across this place. Ellen touches lives.”

Mrs. Mannoia played an integral part in the design, decorating and furnishing of the residence hall through its construction. She contributed her own money to make it a featured facility on the Greenville College campus.

Tidball also described Mannoia as the “reflection of the spirit of [Greenville College]. A woman of God, a woman of character, Ellen Mannoia with graduate Justin Chesnut.a woman of service, a loving and caring wife and mother, a woman of beauty and of hospitality.” At the end of the public announcement, Mrs. Mannoia received a standing ovation from the Commencement crowd.

Ellen Mannoia was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in 1988, but went into remission for over ten years. In 1999 she moved to Greenville when her husband, Jim, assumed the presidency at Greenville College. Soon after, the Mannoia’s learned that Ellen’s cancer had returned. During these eight years and through numerous cancer treatment series, Ellen has served as a model of strength, poise, and warmth in the Greenville community.
