Recognition for Excellence in Education
Greenville College and Dr. Ed Blue received an award from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) for their outstanding accreditation review and for training 30 new state education team members. This was the first time the ISBE awarded a college for their proficiency at addressing state and national requirements. G.C. was also recognized for hosting a training session for new education board members.
Dedication of Almira College House
Last October, restoration of the Almira College House began as commemoration of 150 years of higher education in Greenville. Almira College House, now known as the Bock Museum, was constructed in 1855 as a classroom building prior to the construction of Hogue Hall. It now showcases the largest single collection of works by sculptor Richard W. Bock and serves as a landmark to past generations of Greenville College alumni.
75th Anniversary of Messiah Choral Performance
December 4th, 2005 marked the 75th anniversary of the Greenville Choral Union and Orchestra’s performance of Handel’s Messiah. The Union consisted of members from south central Illinois and totaled nearly 150 members. Ten former members who have now gone on to become either professional or semi-professional vocalists returned to lend their voices. A reception followed in Joy House on campus hosted by President and Mrs. James Mannoia.
Grant Awarded for Technology Development
The Illinois Institute of Independent Colleges and Universities recently awarded a $64,000 grant to Greenville College as part of their Project Connect. The college used the money to support the educational program. The college wished to provide a number of projects such as an online new teacher-mentoring program, more network based courses, and two additional “smart classrooms.” The college also established an orientation website for adjunct instructors and created online courses for both adult and graduate study programs.
Students "Rough It" to Raise Awareness
109 students gathered together on Scott Field to set up the cardboard boxes that would be their homes for the next two nights. Shak-a-thon, as it is known, is sponsored by the Greenville College chapter of Habitat for Humanity. The goal of Shak-athon is to raise emotional, social and physical awareness of homelessness and substandard housing. Students also took pledges from the community to donate to Habitat for Humanity. Shak-a-thon is an opportunity for students to better understand how a large portion of the world lives.
Recent Graduate Emily Nicholas crowned Miss Iowa
2006 graduate Emily Nicholas was crowned Miss Iowa in June of 2006. Nicholas had won the Miss Cedar River pageant in order to qualify her for the Miss Iowa competition. After encouragement from her older sister who had also competed in and won the Miss Iowa competition in 2004, Nicholas decided to participate. She won the talent portion of the competition with her vocal performance. Nicholas studied Contemporary Christian Music at Greenville.
Women’s Leadership Conference
On October 1, 2005, Greenville College held a day of seminars titled Educating Women for Leadership in remembrance of the Almira Blanchard Morse legacy. Educating Women for Leadership honors her vision for a women’s college in the “west.” Almira College began in 1855 and later became Greenville College in 1892. To commemorate the Sesquicentennial celebration of higher education in Greenville, four women were honored at a special luncheon that also took place that day.
Lewis and Clark Traveling Exhibit
The joint efforts of historians from Lewis and Clark Community College, the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and the Missouri Historical Society sponsored a traveling Lewis and Clark exhibit at the college. The “bicentennial bus” celebrated the 2004 bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark Discovery Expedition.
Matt Bronleewe Performs at Homecoming Chapel
Dove Award nominated writer/producer and Greenville College Alumnus Matt Bronleewe shared his musical talents at the 2005 homecoming chapel. An original member of Jars of Clay, Bronleewe now works with artists such as Michael W. Smith, Amy Grant, and Bebo Norman. Along with music, Bronleewe also has a passion for writing and recently signed a book deal with Random House and is set to release the first of three books in the spring of 2007.
Spring '06 Enrollment
Spring enrollment at Greenville College reached 947 undergraduate students, which was an increase of over 100 students compared with spring enrollment in 2005. This was the highest spring enrollment at GC in five years. Enrollment in the college’s Education programs has also increased.
Hall of Fame
Six individuals and one team were honored on Saturday, April 8, during the Greenville College Athletic Hall of Fame banquet. The class of 2006 inductees included Judith (Arnold) Fritz ’74 and Johnny Branch ’91, athletic category; Dr. W. Richard Stephens, Jr. ’77, coaching category; Dr. Roy Yarbrough ’70, meritorious achievement category; and the 1987 volleyball team, team category. The evening also recognized Beau Meredith ’04 and Julie (Kaufmann) Shultz ’04 as the recipients of the Order of the Orange and Black.
The banquet, which costs approximately $10,000 to fund, was financed by the generous donations of over 40 alumni and friends of Greenville College.
S.W. Andrews Fields
Greenville College continued the expansion of the John M. Strahl Athletic Complex by completing a $140,000 addition south of Bowman Drive on the west side of Elm Street in Greenville. The new facility contains two 80-yard by 120-yard soccer fields and a 100-space parking lot. Used for the first time in August 2006, the facility was named S.W. Andrews Fields.
The development was partially financed through the sale of college property previously known as Andrews Field. The athletic department also utilized money raised through departmental fundraising efforts such as the annual Panther Pride Golf Scramble and the John M. Strahl Athletic Development Fund. To date, the Strahl Athletic Development Fund has received cash and pledges totaling more than $250,000.
