Greenville College Recognizes Four Women at Leadership Luncheon
GREENVILLE, ILL. – Greenville College hosted area alumnae, faculty, staff and students for Educating Women for Leadership ,
seminars and a luncheon held October 1 to honor the legacy of Almira
Blanchard Morse. At the luncheon awards were given posthumously to
Almira Blanchard Morse, Jessie Augusta Duff, Carrie T. Burritt and Mary
Alice Tenny. The college honored these women as individuals who have
supported, strengthened and extended the legacy of Almira Morse.
Selected
as representatives of Almira Morse's legacy and traits, these leaders
span many years and continue to serve as role models for students
today. The awards focused on four traits that describe Almira Morse's
life: Visionary Reformer, Courageous Innovator, Principled Idealist and
Sacrificial Benefactor.
Almira Blanchard Morse
was given the award “Visionary Reformer” for her dream of providing
education to young women on frontier of America and her generous
donation of her inheritance.
Jessie Augusta
Duff was recognized as a “Courageous Innovator” for her work as
Greenville College 's first Director of the School of Music. She was an
able administrator, teacher and confidante for students.
Carrie
T. Burritt was honored as a “Principled Idealist” for her work as a
faculty member and wife of a college president. Her life was a
significant contribution to Greenville 's missionary leadership.
Mary
Alice Tenney was awarded as a “Sacrificial Benefactor” for her
determined efforts to provide the most comprehensive history of Almira
College and Greenville College in her book, “Still Abides the Memory.”
The luncheon and seminars, Educating Women for Leadership, sought
to honor Almira Blanchard Morse's vision for a women's college in the
“west” which became Almira College in 1855, transitioning to Greenville
College in 1892. The college purposed to remember women contributors
since that time, until the present who have, like Almira, given their
legacy of dedication, talent, career and passion for learning and
ideals.
Greenville College is a four-year
accredited Christian liberal arts school with more than 1300
traditional undergraduate, graduate, and adult degree completion
students. Founded in 1892 and affiliated with the Free Methodist
Church, the college is located in Greenville, Illinois, 45 miles east
of St. Louis.
