FOR RELEASE 7/6/05
Greenville College Receives Excellent Review from the Illinois State Board of Education
GREENVILLE,
ILL. – After an extensive review of the teacher education program, a
nine member team of educators representing the Illinois State Board of
Education indicated that Greenville College had met all state and
national standards with no weaknesses. The team commenced the review
on November 6 and concluded their work on November 10, 2004 and the
official results were announced on June 17. The next scheduled
accreditation review will occur in 2011.
Although
the Illinois State Board of Education visited the campus in the fall of
2004, preparation for the review commenced five years ago with the
preparation of numerous documents and a complete revision of the
program from a course based to a practice based format. This
monumental task required the collaborative efforts of school
principals, P-12 teachers, college supervisors, cooperating teachers,
program staff members, and students.
“We are
thrilled with such a positive outcome,” said President V. James
Mannoia. “Our teacher education program faculty, led by Dr. Ed Blue,
spent five years preparing for the review and their hard work paid
off.”
Dr. Blue added that the results represented
a total college effort. “The administration, faculty, students,
members of the information technology department, alumni, area
teachers, and our community college partners all did a tremendous job
of presenting the program to the visiting team.”
Greenville
College has a long tradition of quality in teacher education dating
back to 1928. With a current enrollment of over 500 undergraduate and
graduate students, the education program currently accommodates a
significant portion of the College's total enrollment. In addition to
the undergraduate teacher education program offered on the Greenville
campus, students enrolling at Kaskaskia and Lewis and Clark Community
Colleges may complete four year degree and certification requirements
on these campuses with the first two years offered by the respective
community college and the final two years by Greenville College.
In
March 2003, the College initiated two masters' degree programs – a
Master of Arts in Education (MAE) for current professional educators,
and a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) for college graduates seeking
certification. These programs are conducted at off-campus sites
including Kaskaskia, and Lewis and Clark Community Colleges, East
Richland High School in Olney, and Central Middle School in Belleville
as well as the Greenville campus.
Greenville
College is a four-year accredited Christian liberal arts school with
more than 1300 traditional undergraduate, graduate, and adult degree
completion students. Founded in 1892 and affiliated with the Free
Methodist Church, the college is located in Greenville, Illinois, 45
miles east of St. Louis.
