GREENVILLE, ILL. – For the fourth consecutive year Greenville College Management Department students have flexed their business expertise and savvy in the State Leadership Conference held last weekend. The competition, coordinated by Future Business Leaders of America – Professional Business Leaders (FBLA-PBL), is the largest and oldest business student organization in the world with a quarter of a million members. On the state level students competed against teams from 14 colleges and universities including University of Illinois, Eastern Illinois University, McKendree College and Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Dr. Ivan Filby, head of the Management Department at Greenville College, was also recognized by the FBLA-PBL as the “Advisor of the Year” in the state of Illinois. Serving as the driving force in these competitions, Dr. Filby is quick to defer all credit to the students for GC’s success. “Our students have consistently done very well,” he explains, “In the comprehensive test we have succeeded because of our bright students.” Dr. Filby also credits the importance of small class sizes in upper division courses for GC’s success. With 25-30 Management majors graduating a year, the opportunity for personal attention is limitless.
Each student must be a member of FBLA-PBL to participate in the events. Once registered, the student is required to choose four tests in which to participate. Starting in March students were presented the opportunity to take tests in the subjects of their choice. The results are then announced at the state conference held this year on April 5, with the top two in each test subject representing the state of Illinois. All of the six GC students who had participated received at least one top-three finish, and five will have the opportunity to represent their school and state this summer in Atlanta, GA. This national competition will again test these students in their qualifying subjects. In the past two years GC students have had three top-ten finishes at the national level.
