FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 05/09/08
GREENVILLE, IL – Suits, dresses, rent, gas, student loans, an iPod, car payments and cell phones are all items management students could spend their $1,000 on after receiving the Award for Excellence in Management Studies at Greenville College. Along with the no strings attached cash reward, there is the recognition of being one of the premier students in the Management Department. Not to mention their name will be engraved on a very large plaque that will grace the departments walls. This newly implemented award will be supported by Morris “Buddy” Bond a graduate and former professor at Greenville College. According to Bond there are two reasons for this award, “One is to give recognition to someone in the [Management] department who has excelled in their studies and shown leadership ability. The second is to try to stimulate other students to excel in their studies.” Summing it up he said the award should “reward and encourage.”
This year’s recipient is senior Seth England. A native of Marshall, IL England came to Greenville in the fall of 2004. While earning a double major in Marketing and Music Business England has maintained a 3.93 GPA while participating in a slew of other activities, including his role as the Executive Director of the two day student run music festival AgapeFest. England was also a member of the Greenville College football team. He played safety and started three of his four years and was named a Scholar Athlete in his final season. Dr. Ivan Filby, head of the Management Department at Greenville College says about him, “He really is an all-rounder.”
On receiving the award England said, “I was absolutely flattered to receive this award. I heard that they picked only one and was shocked. The management department seniors are a great group of people. There will be some extremely successful students out of this class specifically”
With the $1,000 he says, “It will be used for practical things that are good investments with my money. There is no way that I can accept this award from the Bond family and use it foolishly.”
The selection process was explained in-depth by Dr. Filby, “The award is to both recognize and promote excellence is academics, leadership, character and career potential. The winner therefore has to be able to demonstrate very high standards in all aspects of their life. First looking for students with academic excellence, next at their character and leadership ability, finally, we think about who we believe will be very big-hitters in their career.”
With job offers in the music industry England looks to be a career “big-hitter” and an ambassador for both Greenville College and the Management Department.
Bond’s vision for this award is long term. “I would like to see it go beyond just me, for my family to continue it when I’m gone.”
