Summer Study in Santiago Print E-mail

INTRODUCTION

The Summer Study in Santiago program originated in the 1970's and thrived in the 1980's as a partnership between Greenville College and Taylor University in the U.S.A. and the Instituto Evangelico (under the supervision of Doña Olga Estevez) in Santiago, Dominican Republic.  Among countless other benefits that travel abroad affords the student, our primary objective is to proide the undergraduate with an intesive language study opportunity; exposure to and interaction with the culture of the Dominican Republic specifically and the Hispanic culture in general; a practical internship in various areas of specialization; and an opportunity for community service in the name of Jesus Christ.

SITE

The Dominican Republic comprises three quarters of the island of Hispaniola (second largest island in the Caribbean).  Snaiard explorers landed on the island on December 5, 1492.  This beautiful treasure is host to some of the oldest colonial sites in the Americas.  It's capital and first organized city, Santo Domingo, boasts having the first university and cathedral in the New World.  To the northwest lies the second largest city, Santiago, home to approximately one million people.  This city, an attractive urban center, with diverse economic and educatonal levels, offers a perfect place for study of culture and global economic factors.  During each three week session students will participate in a tour of historic Santo Domingo, live in the diverse economic culture of Santiago and explore its surrounding provinces, and have opportunity to enjoy the beautiful tourist areas of the beaches on the north coast.
