FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 1/17/05

"Smoke on the Mountain” Returns to the Factory Theatre What happens when you mix an overly-eager pastor, a musical family called the Sanctified Sanders Singers, and a couple of pesky June bugs...? You get an evening of chaotic comedy, soul-lifting joy in the Lord, and some of the best bluegrass gospel music ever as Smoke on the Mountain returns to the Factory Theatre! Performances are Tuesday through Saturday, February 1 – 5 at 7:30 p.m.

The Cast of "Smoke on the Mountain"

Pastor Mervin Oglethorpe has the opening-night jitters. It's the first-ever Saturday Night Sing at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. His small congregation is skeptical about the idea of ukuleles and guitars in the church anyway, and now the Sanders Family Singers are thirty minutes late! The Sanders arrive in a flurry of apologies, rattled pride, and mussed hairdos. Amid the ukuleles, harmonicas, and spoons, and between the strains of "Bringing in the Sheaves," "I'll Fly Away," and two dozen other favorites, you'll hear hilarious but sincere testimonies of faith from: Burl and Vera Sanders, the couple who oversees their talented brood with love and pride; Dennis and Denise, their young twins on the verge of leaving the nest; June, who doesn't sing but "contributes in her own special way;” and Uncle Stanley, Burl's quiet prodigal brother, recently returned to the fold.

Smoke on the Mountain was produced at the Factory Theatre six years ago where the show enjoyed critical acclaim and sold-out performances. The Factory Theatre's encore production this fall, directed by Cecelia Ulmer, features faculty members and students of Greenville College. Greenville residents are: Bill Ahern, Brian Hartley, Dale Martin, Tom Morgan, Veronica Ross, Sandy Schmidt, and Louise Weiss.

We're expecting sold-out houses, so be sure to get your tickets for Smoke on the Mountain early and hang on to your pew! The rafters will be shakin' and your toes will be tappin'! Don't miss this hit at the Factory Theatre! Tickets are on sale now for $6 at Watson's Drugstore and Jo's Java.
