Greenville College Finalizes Music Center Plans
Display on College Ave. Showcases the New Facility
GREENVILLE,
ILL. – The Greenville College board of trustees has chosen a design
concept for a new atrium building, which will be attached to the
current Free Methodist Church facility. The church will soon be
renovated to house the college Music Center .
Presented
by Blanton Construction of St. Charles, MO and architects, LePique
& Orne, the proposed two-floor atrium includes an upper-level
reception area and lower-level music laboratory. Future plans for the
complex include a 1300-1500 seat chapel/auditorium, which will be
located on the west side of the new addition. The college will place an
architectural rendering of the new atrium directly south of Hogue Hall
on the south side of College Avenue during Homecoming week, October
11-17.
The college, which agreed in the spring of
2002 to purchase the Free Methodist Church , will take possession of
the church early next year. Renovation of the Music Center and
construction of the new atrium will begin pending funding for the
project.
The college plans to convert the 38,000
sq. ft. of space in the Free Methodist Church into a new home for the
entire music department that will include classrooms, practice rooms,
studios and lab band space. Plans also include adapting the sanctuary
for use as a recital hall.
The renovated music
center's featured addition, a beautiful glass atrium, will serve as an
attractive meeting place for elegant dinners, receptions and other
special events. It will undoubtedly be one of the highest-traffic and
most-used facilities on our campus.
The
lower-level will contain a controlled acoustical environment where lab
bands from the Contemporary Christian Music program can practice and
perform, without disturbing local residents. This building will also
house Blackroom Records, a student-run record label.
Since
its founding in 1892, music has remained an integral part of the
Greenville College curriculum. Students can major in music, music
education, pedagogy and literature, church music and contemporary
Christian music. In fact, nearly 20 percent of students have chosen to
pursue a music degree.
Greenville College is a
four-year accredited Christian liberal arts school with more than 1200
traditional undergraduate, graduate, and adult degree completion
students. Founded in 1892 and affiliated with the Free Methodist
Church , the college is located in Greenville, Illinois, 45 miles east
of St. Louis .
