Christian Philosopher, Speaker, and Author Dr. Dallas Willard to Deliver G.C. Commencement Address
GREENVILLE
, Ill. – Those attending the 112 th commencement exercises at
Greenville College Sunday afternoon will have the opportunity to hear
from nationally renowned Christian philosopher, speaker, and author Dr.
Dallas Willard as he delivers the commencement address to the Class of
2004. The traditional commencement exercises begin at 3 p.m. in the
Crum Recreation Center .
Willard, who
currently serves as a professor in the School of Philosophy at the
University of Southern California (USC), earned a doctorate in
philosophy at the University of Wisconsin after undergraduate and
graduate studies at William Jewell College, Tennessee Temple College,
and Baylor University . Known for his philosophical publications,
Willard has written extensively in areas of epistemology, the
philosophy of mind and of logic, and the philosophy of Edmund Husserl.
During the last 20 years, Willard's endeavors have included
translations of Husserl's writings from German to English. He has made
Husserl's “Logic and the Objectivity of Knowledge” (1984), “Early
Writings in the Philosophy of Logic and Mathematics” (1993), and
“Philosophy of Arithmetic” (2003), available to English readers.
In
addition, Willard is viewed as a prominent lecturer and publisher in
religion. In 2002, he released “Renovation of the Heart,” which
received the 2003 Book Award in the category of Spirituality from
Christianity Today magazine. His 1998 book, “The Divine Conspiracy,”
received Christianity Today's Book of the Year Award in 1999.
Willard
also published “The Spirit of Disciplines” (1988) and “Hearing God”
(1999). He has accepted roles on the boards of the C. S. Lewis
Foundation and Biola University and belongs to evaluation committees
for the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
During
his teaching career, Willard's academic honors have included initiation
into Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society and Phi Kappa Phi
National Honor Society. He has also traveled to Italy to serve as a
lecturer and faculty participant.
The eight-year
former Danforth Associate has received faculty awards at USC from Blue
Key National Honor Fraternity, USC Associates, and the USC Student
Senate.
Greenville College is a four-year
accredited Christian liberal arts school with more than 1,300
traditional undergraduate, graduate, and adult degree completion
students. Founded in 1892 and affiliated with the Free Methodist
Church , the college is located in Greenville , Ill. , 45 miles east of
St. Louis .
