V. W. Maves Art Center Dedication Slated for Saturday, Oct. 18

Service Highlights Homecoming Weekend Events for Art Department

GREENVILLE, Ill. – Greenville College’s annual Homecoming and Parents’ Weekend has as much meaning for the Art Department as ever before with the dedication of the V. W. Maves Art Center set for Saturday, Oct. 18, at 10:30 a.m. Other activities scheduled for the Art Department include a reunion luncheon at noon in the Krober Room of the Armington Center and artist presentations during the Maves Art Center open house at 2 p.m.

Located on Beaumont Avenue in the former Coast to Coast Hardware building, the center was funded in the spring of 2003 with a $300,000 comprehensive campaign contribution by Dr. Vivien Wallace Maves, a 1928 Greenville College graduate. The 12,000 square foot building now includes classrooms, offices, sculpture and ceramic studios, a wood shop, and individual studio space for seniors. It unites facilities that were once contained in Archer Hall and the Kelsey Building.

Dr. Vivien Maves, a native of Iowa, received his undergraduate training in French and business administration from Greenville College. After a stint in the United States Army, he continued his education at the University of Michigan and Vanderbilt University where he earned a master’s degree and doctorate, respectively, in psychology.

Prior to graduate school, Dr. Maves served as a high school teacher and principal. He joined the faculty at the University of Evansville in 1946. At his retirement in 1970, Evansville named him professor emeritus of psychology.

His brother, Dr. Curry Mavis, also graduated from Greenville College in 1928. After receiving a master’s degree and doctorate from New York University and USC, respectively, Curry returned to Greenville College in 1945 as professor of religion until 1947.

Curry later served on the board of trustees in the 1960’s and 1970’s and chaired the board from 1964 to 1971. His son, Don, graduated from Greenville College in 1958.

Greenville College has scheduled additional Homecoming events throughout Friday and Saturday, Oct. 17 and 18. For further information, please visit www.greenville.edu.
