Low-Income Families
New Scholarship Helps with Unmet Financial
Need/TV Program Educates Families - Students from low-income
families can now get additional financial assistance through a new
scholarship from The Sallie Mae Fund, a charitable organization
funded by Sallie Mae. The Sallie Mae Fund Unmet Need Scholarship
Program will supplement financial aid packages for low-income students
by providing funds to cover financial need not met through typical
financial aid channels, including grants, work-study, loans and
other scholarships.
The scholarship is part of The Sallie Mae Fund's Project Access
initiative, a three-year, $15 million commitment designed to improve
access to higher education by targeting under-served populations
with information, resources and scholarship dollars. Scholarship
America will administer the scholarship as part of the Project Access
initiative.
Guidelines:
- The scholarship will supplement the financial aid package-not
substitute for aid-received from an institution.
- Awards of up to $3,800 will be made payable to the school on behalf
of the student.
Criteria:
Student applicants must:
- Demonstrate financial need of more than $1,000 without loans,
- Have a combined family income of $30,000 or less, and
- Have a cumulative grade point average between 2.5 and 3.0 (4.0
scale) or the equivalent. (It is up to the FAAs discretion if the
student's GPA is above or below this range.)

- Eligible students must submit both a copy of the student application
and financial aid administrator form by May 31, 2003 to be considered
for The Sallie Mae Fund Unmet Need Scholarship Program.

USA Funds Access to Education Scholarships
This scholarship program offers financial support to students with
economic need. Up to 50 percent of awards are targeted to members
of ethnic minority groups or individuals with physical disabilities.
Full-time students are eligible for $1,500 awards, half-time students
may qualify for $750.

Chemical Science Majors
The American Chemical Society (ACS) Scholars Program is
receiving applications for the 2004-05 academic year. The American
Chemical Society Scholars Program will award approximately 100
scholarships to undergraduate students interested in four-year degrees
in the chemical sciences; those interested in transferring from
two-year colleges to four-year colleges to pursue chemical science
degrees; and to two-year students intending to pursue degrees in
chemical technology. High school seniors who will be entering college
are also eligible. The scholarship is valued at up to $2,500 per
academic year for freshman, and up to $3,000 per academic year for
sophomores, juniors, and seniors.A chemical science degree includes the

Another scholarship program helps children of public and private
school employees attend college. Deadline to apply is Feb. 12
for the program, which will offer 26 scholarships totaling
$50,000. The awards include: one $10,000 scholarship; five $4,000
scholarships; and 20 $1,000 scholarships.
To be eligible, a student must be a college bound
high school senior whose parent or legal guardian is a U.S. public
or private school or college employee. The student must have an
overall grade point average equivalent to at least a "B"
average and score at least 23 on the ACT or 1,100 on the SAT. Recipients

Illinois State Teacher Education Scholarship Program
March 1 is the Illinois State priority deadline for Teacher
Education Scholarship Program applications. Scholarships are available
to select graduate as well as undergraduate students from Illinois.

ITEACH Teacher Shortage Scholarships and Minority
Teachers of Illinois Scholarships are worth $5,000 per year. We
have had great success with this program in the past. Submit your
applications now!
The Illinois General Assembly recently passed legislation
creating the Governor Blagojevich-initiated Illinois Future Teacher
Corps (IFTC), a scholarship opportunity which also carries a five
year commitment for teaching service in Illinois. Effective for
the 2003-04 school year, the IFTC scholarship program replaces the
ITEACH Teacher Shortage Scholarship Program and is administered
by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission. Students planning
on teaching in a teacher shortage discipline, including early childhood
education, could be eligible for up to $10,000.
For the initial cycle of awards for the coming school year, students
who previously applied for the ITEACH Teacher Shortage Scholarship
Program will automatically be considered for the IFTC program. Students
who have not already applied for ITEACH and are pursuing the specialty
of early childhood education are now being encouraged to complete
an application as soon as possible.
Please note that program eligibility is limited to juniors, seniors
and graduate students. If you are studying in the area of early
childhood education, you are urged to access the Teacher
Education Scholarship Programs application by downloading it from
www.isac-online.org, then clicking on Students and Families, and
then Downloadable Publications. Consideration will be given to students
enrolled in early childhood education who apply by no later than
July 1.

Educators (MAE)
Horace Mann announces $30,000 in scholarships for educators taking
college courses.
The Horace Mann Scholarship Program will offer 36 scholarships
to help public and private school educators attend college. To be
eligible, an applicant must be an educator employed by a U.S. public
or private school district or U.S. public or private college/university
planning to enter a two or four year accredited college or university.
The applicant must have a minimum of two years teaching experience.
Application deadline is May 15, and scholarship recipients
will be announced on or about July 1.
The awards will include one $5,000 scholarship; 15 $1,000 scholarships;
and 20 $500 scholarships. Horace Mann will pay the scholarships
directly to the college or university of each recipient's choice
for tuition, fees, and other educational expenses.

Rudolph Papa Education Scholarship
Rudolph Papa, retired Madison County Board Chairman and educator,
is announcing two $500 scholarships to be awarded to individuals
attending any Illinois university during the 2003-2004 school year.
The scholarships will be awarded from his Citizens for Rudy Papa
campaign fund.
Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- Applicant must have completed all high school graduation or GED
requirements.
- Applicant must be a permanent resident of Madison County, Illinois.

foster care. The deadline is April 1.
Foster children receive public assistance from the department of social services. Since the foster child probably has no income they will
be considered a hardship case. Many foster care agencies and group homes have funds set up.
Girls (Teens) 12 to 18
Girls Going Places
$30,000 to be awarded in Guardian Life Insurance scholarship program.
The application period runs through Feb. 28, for the current Girls
Going Places College Scholarship nomination period, reminds Guardian
Life Insurance Company of America.
The national competition recognizes and rewards 15 teenaged girls
who demonstrate exceptional entrepreneurship. The program honors
girls ages 12-16 who are taking the first steps toward financial
independence.Three top scholarship prizes of $10,000, $5,000, and
$3,000, and 12 finalist prizes of $1,000 each, will be granted for
college. Adults nominate girls by submitting a 1,000-word essay
on why the nominee deserves a Girls Going Places award.
A panel of judges will review the essays and pick finalists that:

Freedom National Scholarship Program is for students who have shown
academic promise and leadership, but need financial assistance and
guidance to go to college. The program provides college scholarships of
$2000 per year to high school seniors that meet the following
eligibility criteria: U.S. resident for one year at time of
application, current U.S. high school senior, GPA of 3.0 to 3.5 (4.0
scale), first time enrollment in a full-time undergraduate course of
study at an accredited 2 or 4 year college or university. Selection
criteria include students who demonstrate financial need, leadership
activities, work history, candidate recommendation. Scholarship is
payable to institution bi-annually. The scholarships are renewable up
to three years subsequent years for the completion of an undergraduate
degree. Students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.0

First in My Family Scholarships
Through a grant to the Hispanic College Fund, The Sallie Mae Fund
will offer college scholarships to Hispanic youth who are the first
in their family to attend college. The “First in My Family”
scholarships will range from $500 to $5,000. Applications are available

Hispanic Scholarship Fund
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) is providing scholarship applications
for it’s current College Scholarship Program. Must be a U.S.
citizen of Hispanic background residing in the fifty states of Puerto
Rico. Must be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business, computer
science, engineering, or business-related major. Applicants must
be enrolled full-time (minimum of 12 credits per semester) from
the fall the present year through the spring of next year. Student must be in
good academic standing with a cumulative Grade Point Average of
no less than a 3.0 on a 4.00 scale. Application due April 15.

Iowa Free Methodist Church Members
Bernice Fretty Memorial Scholarship Information
This scholarship is to provide income to selected Greenville College
students. The sum of $2,500 shall represent the beginning balance.
The fund balance will be depleted as student awards are made. Awards
shall be disbursed at a maximum award of $500 per year or $250 per
semester. When the scholarship fund balance reaches $0 then the
scholarship fund will be closed. The recipient must attend the
Armstrong, Iowa Free Methodist Church . If no students meet this
criteria then the scholarship will not be awarded.
Italian Students/Studies
National Italian American Foundation Scholarship
To be considered for a NIAF scholarship, a student must meet the
following criteria:
- Be enrolled in an accredited institution of higher
education. Have a GPA of at least 3.25 (or the equivalent).
- Be a US citizen or a permanent resident alien.
Fit into one of the two NIAF scholarship categories as follows:
- Category I: Italian American students who demonstrate outstanding
potential and high academic achievements.
- Category II: Those students from any ethnic background majoring or minoring in Italian language,
Italian studies, Italian American studies or a related field, who
demonstrate outstanding potential and high academic achievements.

The Journalism Foundation of Metropolitan St. Louis is inviting eligible

Tylenol announces $250,000 in grants available
Students in health-related fields can apply for The 2003 Tylenol®
Scholarship. The program will award a total of $250,000.
Applications must be postmarked no later than April 30. Recipients
are chosen based on leadership in community and school activities,
grade point average, and intended focus on healthcare-related areas
of study.
More than $6 million in scholarships have been awarded since the
program's inception in 1991. Last year was the first year the awards
from McNeil Consumer & Specialty Pharmaceuticals specifically
targeted students pursuing health-related studies.
"It has been our privilege to assist more than 5,000 students
in achieving their academic goals over the past decade, and we look
forward to working with all those who participate in the 2003 Tylenol
Scholarship program," said Ashley McEvoy, vice president, marketing,
McNeil Consumer & Specialty Pharmaceuticals.
The Department of Labor projects a 26% increase in health-care
jobs by 2008, totaling 2.8 million new jobs in health care.

Ministry Students
Full-tuition Kern Foundation Scholarships Available to Pastoral Ministry Students
Northern Baptist Seminary is one of a limited number of seminaries selected to
offer Kern Family Foundation Scholarships, which cover tuition costs
for up to three (3) years for students enrolling in the M.Div. program.
The Foundation's goal is to provide funding for qualified young people
who will hopefully enter ministry sooner as a result of finishing their
theological education following college. However, there are only a limited number of scholarships available .

Music Majors - Religious
Applications for the merit scholarships issued by the National Religious Music Week
Alliance must be received by March 15. Award winners will be announced
April 15.
Beginning this year, these $2,500
scholarships will be awarded annually to individuals enrolled in a
college music program leading to a career in the ministry of music.

The American Scholars National Honor Society have scholarships,

The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans
The Fellowship supports thirty individuals a year for up to two
years of graduate study in any subject anywhere in the United States.
Candidates must be either holders of Green Cards, naturalized citizens,
or children of two naturalized citizen parents.

Physical Disabilities
USA Funds Access to Education Scholarships
This scholarship program offers financial support to students with
economic need. Up to 50 percent of awards are targeted to members
of ethnic minority groups or individuals with physical disabilities.
Full-time students are eligible for $1,500 awards, half-time students
may qualify for $750.

through April 15.

Illinois Real Estate Educational Foundation Scholarships
There are 3 Foundation Scholarships. All applicants must be a U.S.
citizen and a resident of the state of Illinois attending school
full-time and pursuing a degree with an emphasis in real estate.

10 - $500 Scholarships–for low-income residents of Bond, Clinton,
Marion & Washington Counties
We will also be awarding a $5000 Scholarship in memory of C. Russell
Rose, former director of BCMW.
The scholarships are open to residents (of the 4 counties) desiring
to further their education during the 2003-2004 school year at an
Illinois accredited two year community college, vocational school,
or four year college or university.
Eligibility Criteria will be based on: Income, GPA, A 100-200 word
career goals statement, 3 letters of recommendation, and an interview
with the Scholarship Committee.

Women
Talbots Women’s Scholarship Fund
Applicants to the Talbots Women’s Scholarship Fund must:
- Be women currently residing in the United States
- Be women who have earned a high school diploma or their GED at
least 10 years ago (no later than Sept. 1992) Be seeking a degree
from an accredited 2 or 4 year college or university, or vocational-technical
school.
- Have at least two full time semesters remaining to complete their
undergraduate degree.
