Employment Information
Employment opportunities for students are limited by regulations of the Department
of Homeland Security and United States Department of State. Students
should not plan to meet their financial obligations to Greenville
College through on or off-campus employment.
Prerequisites to Working
- Receive job offer on campus.
- Apply for Social Security Card. Multicultural Affairs Department will help
you through the process. The Social Security Application can be found
at http://www.ssa.gov/. Must have
current I-20, Passport, school photo ID. The process of receiving a
social security card takes approximately 4-6 weeks.

Work On-Campus
Students in F-1 status are eligible to work on campus immediately upon their
arrival to the U.S. with completion of Social Security Card
application, for up to twenty hours/week when school is in session and
full-time during vacation periods (Christmas vacation, fall and spring
breaks, summer vacation).
Work Off-Campus

International students become eligible to apply for off-campus work
after nine (9) months of lawful full-time student enrollement. It is
essential to understand that the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration
Services (BCIS) definition of work includes any employment, on-campus
or off-campus, whether paid or unpaid. ALL ARE DEFINED AS WORK. Three
fundamental rules must be remembered:
- Nine (9) months enrolled in Higher Education
- F-1 students cannot work more than twenty hours per week, except during vacation periods.
- All forms of work require some type of authorization. Students should come
to the Multicultural and Cross-Cultural Programs office to initiate the
approval process.
