The faculty in the Department of Chemistry assume that through the study of chemistry one can understand another aspect of God’s creation. Consequently, chemistry logically becomes a part of the College’s concept of Christian education.

Chemistry: The Central Science
Virtually every technical field involved in research or product development relies on experts in the field of chemistry. Sandwiched between the subatomic levels of particle physics and the macromolecular regions of biology, chemistry is an important bridge between these fields and offers key skills for successfully pursuing careers in all three areas.

In pure research, chemists explore the most fundamental characteristics of matter (compositions, structures, and properties). Chemists also participate in applied research development and quality control. The day-to-day impact of chemistry on the lives of everyone is evidenced by its role in the current issues of health care, energy, environment, and food production.

Your Professional Preparation
Ordinarily a chemistry degree is viewed as preparation for a career in laboratory chemistry; however, you should know that many careers outside of the laboratory require chemical knowledge. Examples include patent law, teaching, environmental regulatory assurance, scientific writing, and scientific sales and marketing.

You can combine your chemical studies with an emphasis in biology or physics to prepare for a career in biochemistry or chemical physics. Regardless of your emphasis and career choice, you’ll enjoy the challenge of attaining our Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry.

Many of our graduates seek advanced studies. Nearly half of our majors pursue a career in medicine. Over 90% of our applicants to medical school have been accepted. Thus, a major in chemistry at Greenville College is excellent preparation for entrance into medical school.

Our Bachelor of Science in Chemistry Education combines a thorough understanding of chemistry with teacher training leading toward certification at the mid-school and secondary level (6-12). (See our brochure on teacher education).

Well-trained faculty will teach you. All full-time faculty in the Division of Mathematics, Natural Sciences, and Computer Science have the Ph.D. degree.

An Experience Oriented Program
The modern Snyder Hall of Science houses our classrooms and laboratories. The instruments used in chemistry include gas chromatographs, high-pressure liquid chromatographs (funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation), UV visible spectrophotometer, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, flame and furnace atomic absorption, ultracentrifuge, calorimeter, and automatic titrator. Extended use of these instruments is an important part of your chemical education at Greenville.

Pathway to a Career
Preparation for success necessarily includes rigorous academic work. Our faculty will challenge you academically and then assist you in career plans. You will explore new scientific horizons through joint research projects with professors whose work is published and who instruct you personally. As you interact with them outside the classroom and laboratories, you can count on them to help you plan and prepare for your career goals.

More for your Money
You deserve more from your college education than only career training. We guarantee you’ll receive topnotch instruction in chemistry but we also want to prepare you for a meaningful and fulfilling life.
