Program Mission
Concomitant with the institutional mission is a Teacher Education Program
Mission applicable specifically to candidates enrolled in both undergraduate
and graduate programs. This statement is as follows:
Teacher candidates will create classroom environments that promote
cooperation and responsibility, support self-worth, affirm the dignity
of all students, and stimulate learning.
Program Vision
In light of the distinctly Christian mission of Greenville College and
the public need for quality education, the Teacher Education Program
envisions itself to be:
- A primary vehicle through which the College manifests its commitment to P-12 education
- A primary means by which the College encourages candidates to fulfill a central role in public discourse
- The central foci within the College for the study of pedagogical and professional education issues and problems
Intents
In light of this vision, the Program intends to:
- Prepare candidates to make positive contributions to P-12 education (note eleven program outcomes)
- Prepare candidates who demonstrate predilections necessary to help all students learn (note eight candidate dispositions)
- Provide support for practicing teachers in order to help them grow professionally
- Provide support for children and youth, their families, and communities
by offering programs to faith based agencies in urban areas
- Inform the campus community of issues facing teacher education
Practices
To fulfill these intentions, the Teacher Education Program subscribes to the following practices:
- Maintaining close cooperation and collaboration with P-12
professionals, the faculty of other divisions within the institution,
and agencies and groups who seek to improve educational practice
- Performing field experiences and clinical practices within schools
affording multi-cultural milieus, including significant experiences
with minority students
- Making vigorous efforts to recruit and retain candidates from diverse backgrounds
- Offering pre-collegiate programs affording minority youth on-line and
on-campus opportunities to sample and participate in college life
