TESOL - Teaching English as a Second Language |
|
|
|
Greenville College’s emphasis on developing a person for service
and leadership often results in Greenville College students and
graduates working on the mission field, in overseas jobs, or in
social and community service positions throughout the United States.
Often these students are asked to teach English as a second language
to people in their community. In order to prepare our students well,
Greenville College has designed a 15-hour Teaching English as a
Second Language Program. The program is an “emphasis”
area offered through the English Department. With an additional
3-hour English course the students can get a minor in English with
a Teaching English to Speakers of Other Language (TESOL) emphasis.
This 18-hour minor will allow students from a number of different
majors to study this emphasis without adding a burden to their academic
load.
The program prepares students to understand the second language
acquisition process, to acquire skills and methods to teach speaking,
listening, reading and writing skills to their ESL students, in
addition to obtaining information on cross-cultural communication
and on developing cross-cultural relationships. Greenville College
is one of a few colleges that provide this training at the undergraduate
level. The program is also a good basis for those who decide to
pursue this area of study at the graduate level.
Courses required for the emphasis:
ENG 214 - Theoretical Foundations of TESOL [Second Language Acquisition]
ENG 315 - History of English Language and Modern English Grammar
ENG 317 - Methods and Materials for TESOL
ENG 318 - Cross-Cultural Studies for TESOL
ENG 399 - Language Assessment and Evaluation for TESOL
