Health, Physical Education and Recreation Majors Print E-mail

Our society stands in desperate need of competent physical educators. Despite the health craze in our country, much of our citizenry remains in poor physical condition. Many who do enjoy good physical health place an unhealthy emphasis on their bodies alone, thereby failing to recognize the relationship of their bodies to their entire beings.

Greenville offers a holistic approach to health, physical education, and recreation. We invite you to come and discover the need, the significance, and the value of a quality HPR program.

Pathway to a Career
We offer Bachelor of Science degrees in Physical Education and in Recreation. Both programs allow emphases in several areas to specifically direct you toward your career goals. You'll have the opportunity to gain experience and to position yourself professionally through "hands-on" practical activities. Your field experience can include coaching, teaching, officiating, training and directing intramurals, adult fitness classes, or youth recreation programs.

B.S. in Physical Education

  • K-12 or 6-12 Majors
  • Health Education Offerings
  • Coaching Minor

Our physical education programs combine professional education and physical education course work with practical experience to fully enable you to enter a teaching career upon graduation. Health Education course work may be added to complement your major. Seven sports are included in the coaching curriculum: football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, and track and field.

You can be assured of the best in professional education preparation. Our education programs have received the highest accreditation given by both the Illinois State Board of Education and the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education.

B.S. in Recreation

  • Sports Management
  • Adult Fitness
  • Recreational Leadership

Within our society, opportunities for persons with recreation leadership skills are abundant. Positions in health clubs, camps, recreation agencies, and corporate fitness programs continue to increase in number. Adult Fitness is also an expanding field with training and nutrition centers. Some of the best opportunities reside in the Sports Management field.

Competent individuals can find positions in sports administration, publicity, training, coaching, country clubs and resorts, public recreation departments, corporate athletic programs, sports ministries, public relations, athletic/intramural facilities, and the sporting goods industry. Our B.S. in Recreation also provides a solid foundation to enter graduate school in athletic training, sports management, exercise psychology, or other related areas.

A Distinguished Athletic Department
Among our faculty and alumni, we have several world and national leaders in amateur athletics:

  • President of both the United States Baseball Federation and the International Baseball Association.
  • President of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).
  • Members of the International Olympic Committee

Intercollegiate participation is available in seven sports for men: baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis, football, cross-country, and track; and in seven sports for women: basketball, cross-country, track, tennis, soccer, softball, and volleyball. In addition to NCAA Division III membership, the college also belongs to the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) and the SLIAC.

A large number of students participate in a full program of intramural sports throughout the entire school year. Our activities provide opportunities for you to interact with fellow majors and fine student athletes in varied situations.

A "People Oriented" Field
Careers in health, physical education, and recreation allow you to work directly with people for their overall benefit. To accomplish this, you must gain an understanding of physical activity and its relationship to the human body. Our program emphasizes your preparation through developing skills, increasing knowledge, improving attitudes, and establishing a basic philosophy of physical education. Throughout your training you'll be challenged to develop a life perspective that integrates your current activities and your future goals.
