Program Overview
At Greenville College, we believe our students need a solid spiritual foundation to succeed in life. We encourage them to understand and appreciate the traditions and practices of other faith communities, as well as their own. It's part of our overall mission to transform students for lives of service and character.
Toward this end, the College has established the Shapiro Chair for Jewish-Christian Studies. The interdisciplinary chair serves both the Religion/Philosophy and History departments, and is the first endowed chair at Greenville College. This vision follows over twenty years of foundational work developing relationships with synagogues and Jewish leaders in Chicago.
In keeping with our tradition of experiential, hands-on learning, all GC students participate in class triops to synagogues and other religious sites. Rabbi Harold Kuschner, author of "When Bad Things Happen to Good People," visited the campus in 1999, and in 2000, GC hosted an exhibit of the Dead Sea Scrolls. In addition, we have established the Samuel Sandmel Annual Lecture Series. The late Professor Samuel Sandmel of HUC-JIR of Cincinnati was a prolific scholar of Paul and Philo, and author works on Scripture, Christianity, and Jewish-Christian relations. Our first lecturer of this Series was Dr. Marc Bregman of Hebrew Union College/Jewish Institute of Religion ( Jerusalem ). Every spring, we will bring another established scholar in Jewish-Christian Relations onto campus for a Lecture event. Finally, we offer numerous colloquia, film forums, and recognitions of High Holy Days in which our students and community can participate.
