The Professional Assistance for Student Success (PASS) Program is designed to help students achieve success in college. Greenville College realizes that some individuals do not develop to their full potential in high school, but still have the ability to successfully do so in college. Because of this need, the PASS Program provides a means for students to succeed in college by offering a supervised and supportive program to develop and promote the skills necessary for success. The PASS Program accepts thirty new students each year.
Why am I being placed in PASS?
Students not meeting all of the following admissions criteria for Greenville College,
will be considered for the PASS Program:
- Upper-half of your high-school graduating class
- A 2.40 GPA on a 4.00 scale
- An ACT composite score of 18 or a SAT composite of 860
Not meeting these criteria indicates that you may have difficulty with some courses
at Greenville College and that you could benefit from the specialized support that
will find in the PASS Program. Admittance to Greenville College will be contingent
upon agreement to be part of the PASS Program if you are recommended for the program.
How Does PASS Work?
The first week of the semester, PASS students will attend a meeting to be assigned
to a PASS group leader/tutor and to get to know the other members of the group. This
group usually consists of five or six student and the tutor. During the semester,
each PASS student must participate in a minimum of six hours per week of supervised
study time in a tutor-led study group. In the meeting, each group will determine its
study contracts and group meeting times. The group meets in two-hour blocks of time,
three days per week. This scheduled item is designed to help you begin to build a
disciplined study schedule, but shouldn't be considered as the only study time
you spend during the week.
In addition to your study groups, you will be required to take and successfully
complete a one-hour study skills class designed to help you learn to be a successful student.
How can PASS help me?
PASS can build confidence in your ability to succeed in an academic environment. It
can help you make a smooth transition from high school to college, teach you good study
habits, and provide you with a lot of emotional and academic support. Student who have
successfully completed the program often attribute that success to the consistent study
hours and support that helped them learn to study and keep grades up.
How will my progress be evaluated?
Your progress in each class and in your PASS group will be assessed at the end of the
second, fifth, and ninth weeks of the semester. If you are not attending the study
sessions or your classes, or if your grades fall below a C in your classes, you will
have a mandatory meeting with the PASS Program supervisor to discuss the problem and
jointly seek solutions. Failure to meet the new expectations as well as the PASS
Program requirements may result in a review of your participation in school.
At the end of the fourth and eighth weeks, faculty submit low-grade reports for students
to help with the evaluation process. This information will be shared with you in a personal
conference.
At the end of the semester, your progress will be reassessed to determine whether you
should continue in PASS or advance out of the program. Students admitted in the PASS Program
may be placed on academic probation or dismissed if the first semester GPA falls below 1.50/4.00.
Will everyone know I'm in a "special program"?
Only if you tell them! PASS is designed to help you be successful in college. Student in
the program take regular classes. There is no stigma - just a lot of support and help.
Greenville College only admits students who are capable of meeting its academic expectations.
PASS offers you the tools, the time, and the support, along with your hard work, that will
help you in meeting those expectations.
