General Education Cross-Cultural Requirement Print E-mail
hands In March of 2000, Greenville College faculty unanimously voted to require students to take one 3-hour course or experience that engages them in extensive cross-cultural learning. The faculty approved the criteria and cross-cultural courses (provided below) are being developed and incorporated into the curriculum. Cross-Cultural Criteria
  1. Focus on a cultural group or groups other than the predominant culture group of the United States.
  2. Provide a significant knowledge base regarding a different culture or cultures and, in so doing, emphasize the importance of developing a comprehensive worldview.
  3. Explain ethnocentrism and its role in the development of perceptions and reality.
  4. Focus on the alternative views of reality and perceptions of the cultural group(s) studied: beliefs, values, customs, language, non-verbal communication, etc.
  5. Include the study of the accomplishments of the culture(s) being considered.
  6. Strive to develop empathy toward the group or groups studied.
  7. Address the issues of cultures in conflict between and within nations.
  8. Develop an understanding of social and cultural change.

Cross-Cultural Courses

  • In order for a course to be approved by the General Education Council as meeting the cross-cultural requirement, it must meet a majority of the cross-cultural criteria.   • Cross-cultural criteria can also be met through alternative, off-campus experiences. Students should review the Greenville College Cross-Cultural Requirement Information sheet (111K .pdf) in order to evaluate whether or not an experience would qualify as a cross-cultural experience.
  • Faculty wanting to submit a qualifying off-campus experience for cross-cultural credit need to fill out the Cross-Cultural Experience Proposal Form (94K .pdf) and submit to the This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
  • Students wanting to submit a qualifying off-campus experience for cross-cultural credit need to fill out the Cross-Cultural Experience Alternative Form (111K .pdf) and submit to the This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
  • Students must receive cross-cultural course approval for alternative, off-campus experiences PRIOR TO the experience.
  • Paperwork for an cross-cultural experience must be turned in 2-3 months in advance for the experience to count.
