President
of Greenville College, Dr. V. James Mannoia explains the purpose of
this cooperative community service project. “Our vision in this joint
project is not only to put ‘feet’ and ‘hands’ to our calling to help
God’s people in need but in the process to become stronger ourselves,”
said Dr. Mannoia. “Each of our institutions can individually become
healthier communities within ourselves as we turn our attention to
helping those outside. If a healthy human body requires exercise, then
surely the body of Christ is healthier when it serves.”
The
college community has a history of involvement with Habitat for
Humanity both in building homes and raising awareness of homelessness
through Shak-a-thon, an annual event held on Scott Field where students
spend two nights living out of card board boxes.
Habitat
for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian
organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and

affordable place to live in dignity and safety.
Habitat
has built more than 200,000 houses around the world, providing more
than 1,000,000 people in more than 3,000 communities with safe, decent,
affordable shelter. Founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller, HFHI
has found the most successful Habitat affiliates are those with the
strongest church support.
