The centennial celebration of Greenville College provides an ideal occasion to reflect on the origins and growth of this school. The purpose of this book is neither to whitewash the past nor laud it uncritically. Rather, the aim is to offer valuable insights into the college’s development, as it stands at the threshold of its second century.

This chapter and the next will focus on Greenville College’s development from the perspective of the principle tasks and contributions of each of its presidents. Each man played an important role in defining the major tasks faced during his tenure, but he is only one contributor to the development the college made during his time. It is only partially true that a college is simply the lengthening shadow of its president.
