My name is Deloy Cole, and I have been a professor at Greenville College for 10 years. After graduating from Greenville College with a Bachelor's of Science in Computer Science with a Mathematics Major, I went on to receive my Master's in Computer Management and Information Systems from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
I have a wife and three children, one daughter and two sons. My daughter Avery is a GC alumni, and my son Ryan is a student here as well. My wife is responsible for running Jo's Java, the beloved coffee shop on campus.
Why I work at GC
I was called to return to Greenville College in 1999, for several reasons. At the time I lived in California, and I was excited for the opportunity to move my family to the small, welcoming community of Greenville. I was also drawn to the fact that GC is a Christian college, and looked forward to the prospect of sharing my faith with my students. Also, Greenville is my alma mater and the College has always held a special place in my heart.
How I started working with Digital Media
I first discovered computers during my time in college. I learned early on that I get bored easily, so variety was a necessity in any career I chose to pursue. Technology is always changing and always developing, so there's always something new to learn. While studying for my undergrad, I experimented with every aspect of computer science available. I quickly realized that programming was my favorite aspect of digital media. I'm a logical person by nature, which perfectly suits me for designing programmers. I enjoy working on the lower level of digital media, providing the foundation for the remaining aspects of DM.
How I use DM outside my role as professor
I currently provide consultation for several websites and databases. My recent work has been targeted towards a number of non-profit community organizations, including the Dirty Roots Revolution, the Simple Room, as well as the Greenville Regional Hospital. My main passion, however, lies in merging digital media with missions. As I participate in mission's trips each year, to destinations including India, Venezuela, Guatemala and New Orleans, I strive to create media that will encourage other people to become involved in missions as well. Some of my favorite trips have been organized by GC, travelling with students to California, Colorado and the Caribbean.
My favorite aspect of my job
I love the many opportunities that my job provides for me to get creative with my students. It is a joy to watch as they discover their own creativity through the many interactive projects they must complete over their four years at GC. Ultimately, my greatest joy lies in watching them succeed beyond the realms of their education, as they enter the job market and begin down the path towards a successful and rewarding career.
