My name is Kim Minshall. I am a junior graduating in 2012 with a Digital Media major with emphasis in Art and a minor in Business.
My Mom and Dad both attended Greenville College. I grew up my entire life telling myself that I was going to be different. I was convinced that I would never come here. I wanted to try something different, all on my own. When looking into colleges, I decided to at least apply to GC, to keep my options open but mainly to please my parents. I procrastinated until the very last minute before I decided where I would spend the next four years of my life. My mom kept assuring me that God would open the door to where I should be, but honestly, I felt like I had no signs! I have always known that I had a passion for art and designing things on the computer, so I knew I wanted to go somewhere that had a good Digital Media program. I had narrowed it down to the two schools and was primarily focusing on what they had to offer as far as DM was concerned. After much consideration and countless "pros and cons" lists, I came to realize that Greenville had everything I was looking for. I am able to take the classes I want-classes that actually benefit the type of things I am interested in.
I had known I wanted to major in Digital Media prior to Greenville, but was unsure of which emphasis I wanted to pursue. Being able to take a wide variety of Digital Media courses has helped me narrow down my search and has helped me pin point the areas I want to focus on. I have learned so much through my courses so far and feel open to a variety of fields regarding Digital Media. It turns out that Graphic Design and Photography are my main passions but it is comforting to know that I can always fall back on video, recording, and programming if ever necessary.
The best thing about the Digital Media program is the wide variety of skills each student is required to study. It makes an individual well rounded in all areas. By understanding the industry on a broader level, opportunities are drastically increased.
The professors at Greenville have also influenced me tremendously and truly encouraged me to achieve my greatest potential. I came into the Digital Media Program being a "newbie" to most of the subjects. The fact that Greenville makes each student take an Intro to DM class really benefited me personally. It gave me a taste of all the tracks available, and showed me the ones I could most likely succeed in. Having taken a photography class in high school, I told myself that it was not for me after realizing that I was lacking the "creative touch". I soon changed my mind after taking a digital photography class at Greenville. My teacher had faith in my work and taught me so many valuable skills. As it turns out photography has now become one of my favorite hobbies and a part time job for me. The amount of time and interest the teachers here invest in you can truly make all the difference. They are always there to work with you on a personal level as well as provide opportunities I never would have thought imaginable. I have been blessed with a once in a lifetime internship, giving me the ability to apply what I have learned to the real world.
Greenville College's Digital Media program is not only about teaching you the ins and outs of specific programs. Instead, this program teaches you the fundamentals, as well as trains your creative side in ways that it can be expressed. In a world where programs are constantly changing, skills and creativity can be achieved when you allow Greenville's Digital Media Program to guide your way.
