Greenville College Hosts Medical Bioethics Conference 2010

Featuring Internationally Renowned Bioethicist Dr. Christopher Hook

The Medical Bioethics Conference, presented by Greenville College on April 9 - 10, promises a fill of stimulating and compelling topics that intertwine the worlds of medicine, law, religion and philosophy. While having particular appeal to those interested in the medical, religion, and philosophy disciplines, the conference will also feature topics encountered by those in all walks of life. Whether faced with end of life issues, pain and suffering dilemmas, or questions of whether to lend support to a particular method of medical research, attendees will find invaluable training at the conference.

The conference features internationally renowned bioethicist and Greenville College alumnus, Dr. Christopher Hook, Associate Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic.Dr. Hook, will be joined by fellow Greenville College alumni, Dr. Robert Cranston, Medical Director of Medical Subspecialties for the Carle Clinic in Urbana, Illinois, and by Dr. Aaron Cobb, Saint Louis University.

This conference will focus on areas of medical bioethics that challenge the intellect, but are not commonly addressed in depth in other settings.Randall Bergen, PhD, Vice President of Academic Affairs for Greenville College, stated the conference is an exceptional opportunity for area clinicians and philosophers."It is exciting to have speakers of this caliber.It is especially gratifying that they are Greenville graduates who have made an impact in the world.The campus community is anticipating an outstanding conference" stated Bergen.

The conference will begin at 5 PM on Friday, April 9th, with a presentation by Dr. Hook on the history of medical and bioethics.The conference resumes at 8 AM on Saturday, with presentations by Dr. Hook titled, "The History of Eugenics in America, and Lessons for the Genetic Era", "Human Enhancement or Re-engineering:Technologies and Transhumanist Philosophy", "A Christological Approach to Bioethics", "Conscience and Conscientious Objection in Medicine", and "The Terri Schiavo Saga".Saturday will also include presentations by Dr. Cranston on "Bioethics in the Hospital Setting" and by Dr. Cobb on "A Technological Solution to a Moral Impasse?Embryo Ethics and Biological Artifacts."The conference will conclude at 4 PM with a question and answer session.
