2015 President's Report Spotlights the Power of Our Heritage

Published: April 13, 2021

Burritt Hall, Scott Field, H. J. Long Gymnasium.

GCs campus is comprised of places named for persons who championed ideals that have powered our college community for nearly 125 years.

Just out, the Presidents Report Edition of The RECORDrecalls their inspiration. Entitled Extending Our Heritage, it echoes a central theme in GCs newly approved strategic plan that includes the transition of Greenville College into Greenville University. The issue highlights forbearers like:

  • Carrie T. Burritt, instructor in missions, who championed GCs spread of the Gospel overseas. During Burritts tenure in the 1920s, 12 percent of the Colleges alumni served abroad, and its missionary society swelled to more than 175 members. The 21st century version of Burritts vision includes expanding GCs international reach.
  • Burritts colleague, Professor of Physical Education Walter Scott, who transformed GCs back campus into an athletic field. Scotts personal ownership of improvements that would benefit students resounded in the pounding hammers and whirring drills of todays professors when they rolled up their sleeves to build a locker room in the Briner Training Center and outfit the J K L Academic Hall with a classroom and offices.
  • H. J. Long, chemistry professor turned college president, who called his colleagues to embrace the sacredness of personality. Longs charge will live on tomorrow as it does today, in students who discover how God has called them to uniquely shape the world.

This issue of The RECORD also serves as a report of annual giving for 2014. As such, it presents the names of GCs faithful financial champions. These vital members of our college community helped power the work of Greenville College last year.
