Baseball eliminated in NCAA Regional

WATERLOO, Iowa -- The baseball team was defeated 10-2 by Carthage on Friday in a game that was completed following a suspension of Thursday's action. The loss brought the conclusion to the Panthers' historic season.

Greenville (22-21) pushed across both of their runs in the first inning as freshman Travis Ralls produced a two-run bases loaded single.

Carthage (29-14) bounced right back, evening the game in the top of the second, and taking the lead with a five run sixth inning which saw freshman Panther starting pitcher Jordan Yakel depart from the contest.

The Red Men later added one run in the seventh and two runs in the eighth.

Ralls two-run single was one of three hits for him during the afternoon as he went 3-for-4.

Sophomore Mike Hardin was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Yakel threw 5.1 innings, giving up five runs, three earned, on eight hits and one walk. He posted one strikeout.

Jason Collingwood relieved Yakel and allowed two unearned run in one-third of an inning.

Michael Wittmer came on to pitch one and two-thirds, allowing three runs, two earned, on three hits.

Nick Bifano closed the game by getting the last five outs without surrendering a hit.

Greenville finished the season as SLIAC tournament champions for the first time in its history and as NCAA tournament qualifiers for the first time as well.
