Baseball keeps winning, tops Fontbonne in doubleheader

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The baseball team maintained position in their journey to obtain a bid in the SLIAC tournament with a doubleheader sweep of Fontbonne on Wednesday. The Panthers won 4-3 in the first game and took a 7-2 win in a game stopped in the ninth inning due to weather.

Austin Marsh gave Greenville the lead with an RBI single in the second inning before the Panthers scored three runs in the third inning as they held on for the win.

Trevor Montgomery hit a two-run home run, and Shane Olmsted produced an RBI double in the third inning.

Fontbonne clawed back into the game in the sixth inning with a three-run frame, but Jason Collingwood entered and retired four consecutive batters to gain the save.

Ryan Strohm pitched 5 2/3 innings for Greenville and allowed three runs on six hits. None of the runs were earned. He struck out three and walked one as the winning pitcher.

The Panthers got a 4-for-4 performance from Mongomery as he came up with an RBI single in the third inning and hit a two-run homer in the seventh as they bagged the victory.

Travis Ralls added an RBI groundout in the third inning as Greenville gained a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Jesse Getz scored on an errant throw from the catcher as Fontbonne attempted to gun down Danny Strohm on a stolen base attempt, and Mike Hardin picked up an RBI single to give Greenville another 4-0 lead.

Fontbonne got on the scoreboard with a two-run fourth inning, and things remained quiet on the offensive front until Montgomery's homer.

Dathan Berning provided Greenville with their final run in the eighth inning with an RBI double.

Jonah Moore started for the Panthers on the mound and threw three innings, giving up two runs on three hits while striking out three and walking three.

Marsh finished the game on the mound to pick up the win with five innings of scoreless baseball. He permitted three hits and one walk and struck out three.

The Panthers (18-19, 13-7 SLIAC) conclude their SLIAC schedule on Saturday with a doubleheader against Eureka at 1 p.m.
