Baseball opens with 4-1 defeat

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The baseball team suffered a 4-1 loss at Birmingham Southern in their season opening game on Friday. Ryan Strohm went five innings for Greenville on the mound and gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits with five strikeouts.
Birmingham Southern jumped on Greenville quickly, scoring once in the bottom of the first and added single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings.
Greenville cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the sixth when Jesse Getz singled, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored when Nate Miller hit into a fielder's choice to the pitcher who committed an error.
Phillip Reedy relieved Strohm in the sixth and was charged with an earned run to give BSU the 4-1 win.
The Panthers (0-1) face Birmingham Southern and Transylvania on Saturday.
