Baseball Outlasted By Webster 9-3; Ends Season SLIAC Runner-up

Published: April 13, 2021

HIGHLAND, Ill. After an impressive 10-4 victory over Fontbonne on Friday, Greenville Baseball saw their 2011 season draw to a close on Saturday night at the hands of Webster University. The Panthers failed to capitalize on a three-run lead, and dropped the final game of the double-elimination SLIAC Tournament 9-3 in harsh weather conditions at Glick Park.

Greenville College Baseball finished the 2011 season 18-22 (16-8 SLIAC), and earned second place in the SLIAC.

In Fridays matchup with Fontbonne the Black & Orange dominated early, notching nine runs through four innings on their way to the 10-4 shelling. Freshman lefty Tyler Mitchell was solid from the rubber in the game, surrendering only three earned on five hits to pick up the win.

Kyle Hobar and David Massengill headlined the clubs efforts at the plate. Hobar batted 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI, while fellow senior Massengill posted three runs and two RBI while batting 3-for-5.

In the SLIAC Championship Greenville drew first blood, claiming the 1-0 lead in the first inning behind Coverts clutch RBI double. The senior was GCs key offensive contributor in the game, batting 2-for-4 with the RBI.

Despite the early score Saturdays championship contest proved to be a pitchers duel through six innings, with Greenvilles Covert looking sharp on the mound. Covert dealt six innings of four-hit shutout baseball before Webster exploded in the seventh with five runs on four hits to take the 5-3 lead.

Covert finished with six and two-thirds innings of work with five earned on seven hits before being replaced by Scotty Voyles.

After facing three batters in the eighth, Voyles was relieved by Massengill who looked to work GC out of the late-inning jam. However the damage was already done and Webster notched four runs and mounted a 9-3 lead produced by a stunning three-RBI double.

Greenville failed to score in the ninth and fell 9-3 in the seasonfinale.

"After a really difficult beginning to our season, the guys displayed their character by rebounding to play an outstanding conference season," remarked head coach Lynn Carlson. "They finished the year playing their best baseball in the SLIAC Tournament and not many people thought they were capable of the success they achieved," he added. "They enjoyed being together and persevered through their struggles. I am very proud of these young men."
