Baseball routs Principia in both ends of doubleheader

GREENVILLE, Ill. -- The baseball team didn't have any trouble scoring runs against Principia's pitching on Tuesday night as they took a pair of seven inning wins. The Panthers won the first game 11-1 in a contest scheduled for seven innings and shortened the second game with a 12-2 win in seven innings.

Game 1 Recap

A six-run explosion in the second inning lifted the Panthers to an 11-1 opening game win in seven innings over Principia at Robert E. Smith Field on Tuesday.

The Panthers scored in the second on an RBI single by Dathan Berning, a two-run triple by Mike Hardin, an RBI single by Nate Miller, and a two-run home run by Travis Ralls.

Jesse Getz was hot from the plate for the Panthers. Getz went 2-for-4 and scored three runs. He tripled in the third inning and singled in the fifth inning.

Moore allowed one earned run on six hits and one walk over seven innings. He struck out eight.

After posting one run in the third, the Panthers again scored one in the fourth.

The Panthers tacked on another two runs in the fifth. A sacrifice fly scored Getz to get the Panthers on the board in the inning. That was followed up by Hardin's single, bringing home Caleb Miles.

Game 2 Recap

A seven-run fourth inning hoisted the Panthers to a 12-2 win game two win in seven innings over Principia at Robert E. Smith Field.

The Panthers scored in the fourth on a walk by Nate Miller, a three-run triple by Trevor Montgomery, an RBI single by Travis Ralls, and a two-run error.

Montgomery racked up four RBIs on two hits for the Panthers.

The Panthers relied on Austin Marsh to eat up innings en route to the win. Marsh allowed two earned runs, five hits and four walks while striking out three over seven innings of work.

The bottom of the first saw the Panthers take an early lead, 1-0, on a solo home run by Montgomery.

The Panthers never surrendered the lead after the third inning, scoring two runs on a two-run double by Ralls.

The Panthers (14-18, 9-6 SLIAC) host Blackburn on Friday at 6 p.m. as they look to push toward a SLIAC tournament position.
