Baseball Wins Tournament Opener

HIGHLAND, Ill. -- The baseball team scored in all but the first and second innings as they came from behind to take the lead on two occasions in their 14-9 victory over Spalding in the first round of the SLIAC tournament. Every Panther in the starting lineup had a hit as they were led by three-hit performances by Tim Osborne, Trevor Montgomery, Shane Olmsted, and Dalton McFarland.

Nick Bifano picked up the win for the Panthers as he closed the game with three innings pitched to raise his record to 4-1. He struck out one and allowed one run on two hits.

Spalding was the home team and jumped out to a four run lead after one inning. Greenville scored twice in the third, and Spalding answered with a tally of their own in the third.

Greenville took the lead by scoring three runs over the fifth and sixth innings. However, Spalding quickly regained the advantage in the sixth with a three run frame.

Greenville racked up eight runs in the final three innings to take the win.

Montgomery produced three runs and two runs batted in to go with his three hits.

Osborne had two runs and two RBI on the afternoon.

Olmsted knocked in three runs and had two doubles.

Tyler Mitchell was the starting pitcher for Greenville, and he threw 5 1/3 innings. He permitted seven runs, five earned, on eight hits and three walks. He fanned three batters.

Greenville (23-18) continues the tournament on Friday at 5 p.m. when they face nationally ranked No. 1 Webster in a semifinal of the double elimination event.
