Bastian School of Theology, Philosophy, and Ministry Formally Launched

Bastian School of Theology, Philosophy, and Ministry Formally LaunchedThe Greenville College Department of Philosophy and Theology formally transitioned into the Donald N. and Kathleen G. Bastian School of Theology, Philosophy, and Ministry with a dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony that took place October 5.

Expansion to a school named in the Bastians honor draws special attention to the Bastians (pictured at left) for their service through the Free Methodist denomination, particularly the Greenville community where the couple served with the Greenville Free Methodist Church from 1961 to 1974.

Donald Bastian is bishop emeritus of the Free Methodist church of North America as well as the Free Methodist Church in Canada. He is widely regarded as an effective preacher and Bible teacher. He has authored several books, including the Word Guild Award winners The Pastors First Love: And Other Essays on a High and Holy Calling and Gods House Rules: Seven Biblical Truths to Transform and Enrich Your Family. Bishop Bastian gave the chapel address October 5 in Whitlock Music Center on campus and later engagedwith students in a ministry class. A question-answer format allowed students to tap Bastians experience and expertise. At 90 years old, he continues to speak in churches and teach at the Light and Life Park in Lakeland, Florida, a Free Methodist community where he and Kay spend the winter.

Endowed Chair

With the launch of the School comes the launch of fundraising efforts to endow the Bastian School of Theology, Philosophy, and Ministry Formally Launchednewly created Donald N. Bastian Chair of Pastoral Theology and Christian Ministry.

President Ivan Filby called the school and chair exciting and important developments for the college.

One of our key strategic goals is to build on our strong foundation with both the Free Methodist denomination and the Christian church at large, he said. The Bastian school and chair will certainly help us to do this.

Greenville College has prepared students for pastoral ministry for more than a century. The development of the Bastian School is part of the Colleges move to university status in 2017.
