Celebrate the Season with Christmas by the Fireside at Greenville College

Published: April 13, 2021

Greenville College invites you to the third annual Christmas by the Fireside concert on Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. in the Whitlock Music Center. Join the Greenville College Band, conducted by Will Fairbanks, for an old-fashioned musical event that will ring with the joy of the Christmas season.

The second of four major performances in the Greenville College Band Concert Series, Christmas by the Fireside is full of heartwarming melodies that resonate "Christmas" with concertgoers. The musical styles crisscross the world, including tunes from Vince Guaraldi's Linus and Lucy to the Ukrainian Bell Carol, and from Feliz Navidad to Greensleeves.

Emeritus faculty member Dr. Dan Jensen will reprise his role as narrator while a multimedia slide show accompanies the performance. In addition to the full concert band, smaller instrumental and vocal ensembles will be featured throughout the program.

New this year, nativity scenes brought by members of the band will be on display outside the James Wilson Recital Hall, showcasing a variety of artistic interpretations of the traditional crche. A select group of band members dressed in traditional caroling garb will welcome guests as they arrive, while Dr. Tom Stampfli will provide piano prelude music inside the hall.

The concert's featured work is a series of excerpts from Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker Suite. Children, and those young at heart, will enjoy a special time as the fantastical tale of the Nutcracker is read by storytellers Jennifer Fulton and Gary Dollinger.

Local businesses are coming out to support this holiday event as well. Fresh floral dcor will be provided by the Greenville Flower Shoppe. Following the concert, holiday treats will be supplied by Robert and Vicki Ellsworth/Huddle House.

Bring your whole family along to enjoy the sparkling sounds of Christmas, sing along with some carols, and settle in for a warm Christmas by the Fireside. The concert will last approximately 70 minutes, and admission is free and open to the public.

Greenville College is a four-year accredited Christian liberal arts school with more than 1,500 undergraduate and graduate students. Founded in 1892 and affiliated with the Free Methodist Church, the college is located in Greenville, Illinois, 45 miles east of St. Louis.
