Dubuque Deals Panther’s a Sweep; Baseball Downed 7-3, 11-4

Published: April 13, 2021

GREENVILLE, Ill. The Black & Orange were bested in their first two home games of the year, dropping both Thursday (7-3) and Fridays (11-4) contests to Dubuque at Francis Field.

In Thursdays opener of the two-game set, both teams starting pitchers came out dealing. The match stood deadlocked at 0-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning with each squad only notching two hits through five. However fortunes at the plate would change quickly for the Black & Orange when freshman Jared Massengil beamed an RBI single to centerfield. Massengil would later score on a Dubuque error and help the Panthers take a 2-0 lead entering the seventh.

Unfortunately the Greenville celebration was short lived as Dubuque answered quickly in the late innings. The visiting Spartans added three runs in the seventh, a run in the eighth, and three more runs in the ninth to outpace GC 7-3 and claim the win.

On the mound, Greenville ace Derek Reckmann struck-out six while only surrendering two hits in six innings of work to place GC in outstanding position heading into the final frames. Michael Wittmer was charged the loss in Thursdays duel, pitching two innings and giving up four runs on five hits with a strikeout.

Offensively Dylan Goldsmith and Massengil spearheaded the efforts in the loss. Goldsmith, a freshman infielder, went 2-for-5 with an RBI and run scored, while Massengil posted a run and RBI on a 1-for-4 effort.

On one days rest, Fridays contest proved more of the same for the Panthers as Dubuque posted an impressive offensive showing and slid past GC 11-4. Greenville College had little trouble finding hits (11) but failed to turn the pokes into runs. Junior Kenny Trager went 3-for-5 with a run, junior Cole Lawson posted a 3-for-4 effort from the plate with a run, and Massengil continued his tear of the Spartans with a 4-for-5 performance and an RBI.

As a team the Panthers posted 11 hits in 39 at-bats and struck out 12 times. The Black & Orange left a painful 11 base-runners stranded.

On the mound freshman lefty Jake McMullen was dealt the loss in 4.1 innings of work. McMullen faced 28 through four and gave up nine runs on 12 hits while receiving little run support from his bats.

GC will return to the diamond tomorrow, March 3 as they welcome the Fighting Scots of Monmouth to Francis Field for a 2:00 pm duel.
