GC Philosophy Professor, Dr. Kent Dunnington, Receives National Fellowships

Greenville College Associate Professor of Philosophy Kent Dunnington was awarded two fellowships of national renown for the 2014-15 academic year, totaling $85,000.Dunnington will participate in a yearlong research fellowship atSaint Louis University as part of its Templeton-funded "Philosophy and Theology of Intellectual Humility" project. He also received a semester-long research fellowship from Biola University as part of its Templeton-funded "Intellectual Virtue and Civil Discourse" project.

President Ivan Filby granted Dunnington a sabbatical leave from Greenville College to participate in the fellowships and to continue work on a new book. In the fall of 2014, Dunnington will serve as a visiting fellow at Saint Louis University. In the spring of 2015, he will be a visiting fellow at the Center for Christian Thought at Biola University in La Mirada, California as he concurrently completes his fellowship with Saint Louis University.

Dunningtons fellowships develop his work on intellectual humility, a topic on which he has recently been invited to speak. In February, Dunnington presented a paper entitled "Eristic, Misology, Dialectic: on Wisdom in Higher Education" at Texas A&M University, where he was named Distinguished Alumnus by the Department of Philosophy.In March, Dunnington gave a paper entitled "Intellectual Humility, the Imposter Phenomenon and Educating for Wisdom" at the Wesleyan Theological Society in Nampa, Idaho.

Dunningtons research at Saint Louis University and Biola University this coming year is directed toward the production of another book, tentatively titled, From Virtuosity to Virtue: Educating for Wisdom. Dunningtons first book, "Addiction and Virtue", was published by InterVarsity Academic in 2011, and he is currently completing an edited volume entitled "The Uncertain Center: An Arthur McGill Reader", which will be published by Wipf and Stock.
