The summer research experience at Greenville College allows undergraduate students to gain a deeper understanding of key topics in their field. This summer, students used state-of-the-art equipment and stretched their problem solving skills to tackle projects like DNA sequencing and molecule synthesis.

"The summer program opened my eyes to a true research environment which is certainly essential for my future career in the medical field," said Ben Brown.

Ben worked with Mandy Nappa and Dr. Jake Plummer to synthesize a set of organic compounds that will be used in further research at Harvey Mudd College in California. Overall, seven students worked on five projects spanning a variety of disciplines. Two groups wrote articles describing their research and submitted the articles for publication in peer reviewed journals. Some will continue their research next summer.

"The faculty were able to devote significant time and effort to important and original research in their fields," said Dr. Eugene Dunkley, associate professor and chair of biology. Professors from Greenville College's biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics departments worked closely with students throughout the summer.

"My research project brought about more than just new information; I think I most enjoyed working for Dr. Iler. He put forth so much effort into my project, teaching information, modeling hard work, and demonstrating patience. He also made the research experience fun," said Amber Brown.

Watch as students present a summary of their findings for each project.
