Factory Theatre Launches New Season With The 39 Steps
Published: April 13, 2021
Alex Freeman, managing director of theFactory Theatre, invites local alumni and theater-goers to GUs opening play of the season,The 39 Steps. The spy thriller integrates mystery and romance while making light of its own genre.
It doesnt take itself seriously in the least, Freeman says of the parody adapted from a 1915 novel by John Buchan and a 1935 film by Alfred Hitchcock. The production distinguishes itself for the creativity it demands of its cast. Only four actors play a total of 150 characters.
Freeman anticipates helping cast members create unique physicality for each character. Well spend a lot of time in rehearsal thinking through things like centers of gravity, vocal inflections and ultimately whats going to get the best laugh.
This is Freemans first involvement withThe39 Stepson the production side, but he has fond memories of enjoying it as a spectator.
It is the first play I ever saw on Broadway, he says. So, in that capacity, this play is very special to me.
The 39 Stepsl aunches a production season at the Factory Theatre that will include one play, one musical and a festival of new plays. Plans call for professional guest artists to work on each show and mentor student performers and technicians.
Performances ofThe 39 Stepsare scheduled for October 23-26. For more information, emailalex.freeman@greenville.edu,or call 636-364-8286.
