Football Team Drops Opener to Augustana

Published: April 13, 2021

Traditionally, Augustana has ranked among the best teams on the NCAA Division III level and to beat a football program with the foundation of the Vikings, it can take a near perfect effort to get a win.

The Greenville College football team had its season-opener spoiled by the Vikings Friday evening at Edwardsville High School in a 28-7 defeat behind a less-than-perfect opening game that left first-year head coach Ordell Walker looking at the optimistic side of the contest.

"When you're playing a team as talented as Augustana, you don't have as much room for error as they do," Walker said. "Some of the things we did wrong are easily correctible and I think it says something that even with all our mistakes, we were still in the game in the third quarter."

The Panthers were within reach of the Vikings late in the third quarter following a quick strike touchdown, but the Vikings scored twice within a span of eight minutes to seal the three-touchdown win.

Greenville wasn't overrun with turnovers - Greenville committed just two on the day - but made their mistakes in coverage and in route running mistakes that left potential scoring drives empty.

"We still feel like we're a really good team," Walker said. "You don't feel good about losing, but you hope your guys can watch the film and learn."
