LA CROSSE, Wis. -- Sophomore sprinter Bruce Gray was second in his heat of the 200 meter dash as he placed fifth overall and advanced to Saturday's finals of the NCAA Division III national track and field championships.

Gray, who entered as the number three ranked competitor, was edged out by sophomore Daulton Teaford of Christopher Newport by five one-hundredths of a second in his heat. Gray's time was 21.31 seconds.

Prior to Gray's participation in the 200, he, along with fellow sprinters Josh Garcia, Ryan St. Hill, and Anthony Everett, ran in the preliminaries of the 4x100 meter relay. Despite posting a season's best time of 41.55 seconds, the unit was seventh in their heat and 11th of the 16 teams who competed. They were ranked 14th heading into the event.

The Panthers will continue their particpation at the championships Friday as Josh Kuusisto competes in the hammer throw, and Gray races in the preliminaries of the 100 meter dash.
