Greenville Softball Leaves IC Even After Non-Conference Double-Dip

Published: April 13, 2021

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. The GC women split Wednesday afternoons twinbill with the Lady Blues of Illinois College (2-10, 13-0) to move their overall seasons record to 6-12 heading into conference play.

Senior centerfielder Brya Irvin continued her 2012 tear at the plate, going 4-for-7 at the dish in the two-game set and knocking in a team high four RBI. Irvin batted 2-for-3 in game ones 10-2 loss with two runs and two RBI, and then followed that effort with a 2-for-4 showing in the capper with two more RBI and runs scored in the 13-0 shelling of IC.

In game one the panthers stumbled out of the gate, failing to post a run until the third. Illinois College took advantage of the dormant GC bats and used a four-run third inning to set a tough 5-0 margin. Greenville eventually fell 10-2 and amassed only seven hits in the six-inning duel.

Freshman Jessica Laubecher dished out 4.2 innings from the Greenville mound in game ones loss, facing 27 IC batters and allowing six runs on 14 hits. Laubecher was relieved in the fifth inning by senior Lindsey Schuberth (1-6) who was charged the loss in her one inning of work.

The Panthers bounced back in game two with a 13-0 drilling that involved a complete team effort. Both teams stalled through the first two innings but GC was ignited in the third with all of the games 13 runs coming in the frame. The panthers used 12 hits to pile up 13 tallies and cruise to the victory. Senior slugger Rachel Brewer hit in a game high three RBI while going 2-for-4 at the plate to help the squad offensively.

On the mound Senior Angela Sheets (2-1) dealt a four-hit complete game shutout in the five-inning affair. Sheets struck out a season high five batters while walking only three in the win.

Greenville College softball will next take to the diamond on Thursday, March 29 and battle Principia College in Elsah, Ill. with the double header starting at 3:00 pm.
