Harvard U. Invites G.U. Bio-Chem Major Jessie Chappel To Present
Published: April 13, 2021
Messages that begin with Congratulations! typically signal unwanted junk mail for most of us, but not so for student researcher Jessie Chappel 20. When Jessie opened a recent congratulatory note from the Harvard College Undergraduate Research Association (HCURA), she knew exactly what it was about.
Jessie majors in biology and chemistry at Greenville University and is part of a research team whose work continues to garner interest from the scientific community.
HCURA notified Jessie that she was among an elite group of student researchers invited to present at the National Collegiate Research Conference (NCRC) in January:
Your acceptance speaks to your outstanding accomplishments and potential as an aspiring scholar and researcher. We are eager to welcome you to Harvard in January . . .
Broad Interest in G.U. Students' Research ContinuesJessies team, spearheaded by Assistant Professor of Biology Bwarenaba Kautu, examines the neurophysiological effects of plant chemicals called kavalactones. Jessie co-authored a paperA Behavioral Assay to Examine the Effects of Kavalactonesthat appeared in a recent issue of Stanford Universitys Journal of Bioprotocol.
G.U. alumni Kellie Steele 18, Juliana Phillips 17 and M. Shawn Mengarelli 15 also contributed to the research while studying at G.U. Their work drew interest from the international science community and resulted in multipleawards for outstanding research presentation from scientific societies including the Illinois State Academy of Science.
The students conducted part of their research through Greenville Universitys donor-funded Summer Research Experience. May 2019 marks the beginning of G.U.s tenth summer of student research.
