Make a Movie With Lisa Sharpe: Free Workshops Open to Campus Community

Published: April 13, 2021

Make a Movie With Lisa Sharpe: Free Workshops Open to Campus CommunityThis fall, Assistant Professor of Digital Media Lisa Sharpe is offering fast, fun and free workshops to learn cinematography and editing techniques. They are open to all members of the G.U. communitystudents, faculty and staff. Anyone at G.U. with an idea for a film now has an opportunity to make that vision a reality.

The workshops will take place over three days, from October 30 through November 1, and will focus on building skills. Participants can come as individuals or as a group. They will learn techniques to produce feature-film type cinematography. Register for the workshops by emailing Sharpe.

Three Days Of Learning and Practice For Everyone

The workshop schedule allows for learning and practice:

October 30 - Story building techniques
October 31 Workday
November 1 - How to shoot and edit a narrative short film

During these three days, participants will access the Department of Digital Medias vast array of filmmaking equipment.

Sharpe hopes these workshops will encourage creative work in the field of media and video for persons representing broad interests, not just students majoring in digital media.

Sharpe came to G.U. as a filmmaker. She says, Digital media at G.U. has a video and film emphasis, but people from all walks of life want to make films. I want to see people tap into their creativity that they might not otherwise have an outlet for.

The Digital Media department is a member of the CVCMS (Center for Visual Culture and Media Studies), a consortium of creative majors which also includes English, art, media communication and theatre. The CVCMS encourages and helps facilitate cross-genre study in these fields to help students find their creative niche.

Learn Skills That Can Make Your Great Idea Even BetterMake a Movie With Lisa Sharpe: Free Workshops Open to Campus Community

Whether youre a pre-med student with a great idea for a film, a professor who hopes to make a video to use in class, or a member of the staff looking for fresh, eye-catching ways to package a message, these workshops can help you get started. Participants will leave with a one- to two-minute rough cut, which they can then edit and refine.

This workshop takes place before G.U.s annual 50 Hour Film Festival on November 2. The 50 Hour Film Festival is a contest open to all students where they must produce a film in just 50 hours. Students who hope to enter the Festival can take this crash course and have filmmaking skills fresh in their minds as they produce films.

Sharpe also hopes participants will be motivated to enter films they create as a result of the workshop in the CarpeDM Festival of Film and Animation, which will take place spring semester.

Useful and Fun

Digital media alumna Heather Lawrence 18 has great memories of the time she spent filmmaking at G.U.: I loved to be a part of a team, and one of my favorite videos that I worked on was a commercial that we made for digital media. It was fun because we got to film events and see what other people thought about their experiences within the digital media field.

About her workshops, Sharpe says, What you put into it is up to you. Come to it with what you want to learn, and Ill meet you where youre at. This fall marks Sharpes first filmmaking workshops open to all at G.U., and she hopes to continue holding similar workshops once per semester.
