Media and Theology Mix it Up on Campus

Published: April 13, 2021

Faculty from the Bastian School of Theology, Philosophy, and Ministry at Greenville College recently teamed up with faculty from the Colleges Media Communication Department to present an engaging interdisciplinary approach to theology.

In collaboration with Assistant Professor of Communication and Media Studies Matt Bernico and the Center for Visual Culture and Media Studies (CVCMS), Ben Wayman, 2016-17 Andrews Fellow in Christian Unity, hostedDean Dettloff on campus fora colloquium on Christian unity on March 7.

Dettloff writes about the intersections of religion, politics, and media. A doctoral candidate at the Institute for Christian Studies in Toronto, Canada, he and Bernico had previously collaborated on a paper that appeared in Cosmos and History: The Journal of Natural and Social Philosophy.

Bernico stated that collaboration between theology and media is a natural fit. Both disciplines offer a unique set of conceptual tools that help us understand our world technically and faithfully. When the Bastian school and CVCMS get to team up, GC students get a type of perspective and intellectual engagement that is incredibly unique, novel and cutting edgeI don't think any other CCCU schools are making the strong interdisciplinary connections that we are between media studies and theology.

In Dettloffs lecture, "In the World, Not of It: Christianity and Media in the Electric Age," he explored how the faith of both Marshall McLuhan and Paul Virilio plays out as a foundation of their theories of media and technology.

"The Christian faith is integral to every discipline of study at Greenville College, said Ben Wayman. The Bastian School's recent collaboration with Dr. Bernico and the CVCMS is oneexample of the way in which communication and media studies at Greenville College is shot-through with the glory of God."
