Men's Soccer Appoints John Massena as Faculty Coach of the Week

Published: April 13, 2021

The Mens Soccer Team is starting a new program we are calling Faculty Coach of the Week. We have invited six faculty members from around campus to join our program as an honorary coach for a week, where they will get an inside look at what it is like to be a member of the Mens Soccer Team.

This week we have John Massena joining us. John is the Director of Undergraduate Admissions, and has been working at the college since 2005. John is a 1999 graduate of Greenville and a rabid supporter of the soccer program during his student years. He is one of two student fans to receive a red card for challenging a refs call from the sideline. John had the following to say of his appointment to the soccer staff, I am happy to take my complete lack of soccer knowledge and apply it as a faculty coach this week as we face my brother Ben (GC class of 2001), coach at Lincoln Junior College. I am also completely willing to tackle my brother if things begin to go south.

We are really excited to have John joining us, head coach Chris Swift said. Our program works closely with John and his department in the recruiting process and it has been great working with him over the past year. John is a glutton for punishment as he is joining us for preseason, the most difficult week of the year, but he assured me he was ready to go for 6am practices! It will be a great week, and the trash talk has already begun between John and his brother Ben.
