JACKSONVILLE, Ill. -- The men's soccer team was knocked off on the road Wednesday as they were defeated 2-1 in overtime. Illinois College got the game winning goal with two and a half minutes remaining in the first overtime.

After a scoreless first half, Illinois College put the first goal on the scoreboard in the 67th minute. Just five minutes later, Jonny Madrid of Greenville redirected a shot by Elliot Thompson to tie the match.

Madrid, Josh Ripperger, and Chad Juneau all posted two shots on goal for Greenville as the Panthers forced the Illinois College goalkeeper to make eight saves.

Greenville goalkeeper Ian Hodge was active as he faced 23 shots in the match, stopping six of the eight shots on goal for saves.

"I have mixed emotions about this one," said head coach Chris Swift. "Bitterly disappointed that we gave away another soft penalty and another goal that came from our mistake in the back."

"At some point we have to learn from our mistakes, and maybe the most disappointing thing is that the mistakes are being made by returners and upperclassmen who we need and expect better from."

"On the positive side, we showed character and mental toughness tonight. After we gave the penalty away, we worked and found a way back into the game, something we haven't been able to do this season."

"This was a good preview for us for what we will see in conference, and as we start to get healthy and back to full strength, I have no doubt we will still be in the mix to compete for a spot in the conference tournament, and once we get there, to compete for the tournament title."

The Panthers (1-6) face Rhodes on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and close the week against Hendrix on Saturday.
