Men's soccer shuts out Rhodes

GREENVILLE, Ill. The mens soccer team returned to the win column with a 1-0 shutout victory over Rhodes on Friday.

The Panthers got their only tally in the 24th minute when Jonny Madrid posted his team-high fourth goal of the season.

Greenville made the most of its scoring opportunities as Rhodes outshot Greenville 11-8.

Goalkeeper Ian Hodge posted his first shutout with five saves.

"We needed this one," said head coach Chris Swift. "We played better today and started to correct some of the mistakes we have been making, and when we do that we are going to be able to beat very good teams like Rhodes."

"We got a fairly early goal, and we rode our luck at times, but this group of guys fought hard to get this win."

"I'm happy for Ian to get his first collegiate shutout and it's great that Jonny is scoring goals."

"We are getting healthy at the right time and we have to keep our head down and keep going. We know we aren't anywhere close to where we want to be, but we got closer tonight."

The Panthers (2-6) host Hendrix on Saturday at 2 p.m.
