Men's tennis falls to Franklin

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The mens tennis team traveled to Indianapolis on Friday evening for a tilt with Franklin College. The Panthers lost 6-3 as Code Power won in doubles and singles.

In doubles play, Franklin struck first with an 8-4 victory on the No. 2 doubles court. GC quickly tied the team score as Code Power and Justin McDonald played their best match of the year, winning by an 8-6 score.

With both teams watching, the No. 1 doubles match was locked in a tie at 6-6. Alex Dowley and Jon Urshan played a solid match but came up just a couple of points short. Franklin would prevail in a tiebreaker by a score of 9-8, giving Franklin the team lead with a score of 2-1 headed into singles play.

Freshman Nate Wieland evened the team match at 2-2 with a solid performance as he won at No. 2 singles 7-6, 6-3. Franklin gained back momentum with wins at No. 3 singles and No. 5 singles.

Junior Power closed out his opponent on the No. 4 court by a score of 7-5, 6-4 to keep GC in contention. Soon after, Franklin earned the clinching victory at No. 6 singles.

These are the kind of matches that we work so hard for.," said senior captain Demetrius Bush. "It doesnt get any more exciting than this. It came down to just a handful of points. We will learn from it, and it will make us a better team moving forward. I really like how we fought! We had a chance to win on every court.

The Panthers' season record now stands at 2-2. They travel to Hilton Head Island, S.C., for their annual spring break trip. Their first opponent will be Messiah on Monday, March 16.
